What do you want others to know about lupus?

Lupus is a life altering illness that will take the patient and their loved ones by storm. But, with acceptance, education, and support it will change your perspective and can lead to an unexpected journey.

Why is lupus a cruel mystery to you?

I was one of the "lucky" few that had a relatively quick diagnosis. I had nearly all the characteristic lupus markers and a few extra side disorders to boot. I struggled with the loss of my independence. I used to pride myself in being self-sufficient, stubborn and in control. Lupus doesn't care about pride though, and I was forced to depend on my husband and family for help with everyday life. I hated it first, I was only able to see my weakness and inadequacies. After some major soul searching, support groups and self help books, I was able to realize and appreciate the blessing of a supportive and loving family. I still have my bad days and my flare ups, but we have found a rhythm that works to keep our lives in order and the lupus in check.
